Product details
Despite a few climatic variations at the beginning of the season, the grapevines developed perfectly and under fairly favorable conditions. This resulted in abundance and quality! After a gentle, rainy winter, the season began with spring frosts, but only minor local damage was noted. This was followed by a succession of hot, rainy periods, leading to the development of certain parasites, which were quickly brought under control by our wine-growers. Flowering occurred under favorable conditions at the end of June, heralding an excellent yield. Harvest began in fairly cool weather on September 18, and was spread out over several weeks. The musts were beautifully balanced, comparable to those seen in 1988, suggesting excellent cellaring potential. Grapes from around twenty Premier and Grand Cru villages were meticulously selected to create the blend of this vintage. Our House style can be seen in the use of 58% Pinot Noir, balanced with 33% Chardonnay and 9% Meunier.
Tasting notes
Candied orange peel and orange preserve, crystallised fruits, white pepper, dried flowers, marzipan, honey and caramel. A frank round and ample attack. Mirabelle plum, stewed pears, toast and bees' wax.
GRANDE DAME OF CHAMPAGNE
Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was born in 1777, the daughter of a textile manufacturer in Reims, Champagne. Widowed at the age of only 27, she took control of her own destiny and became one of the first modern entrepreneurs. In an era when women were excluded from the business world, she dared to assume the head of the company founded by her father-in-law in 1772, a role she undertook with passion and determination. Her creativity and lust for innovation led to many firsts in Champagne: the first known vintage champagne; the invention of the riddling table; the first known blended rosé champagne. Three inventions that revolutionised champagne making and were widely adopted by producers, becoming the basis of modern champagne production. Madame Clicquot made her name into a brand of excellence and had it shine the world over. Her formidable contributions earned her the nickname of "La Grande Dame of Champagne".
