The Singleton's most indulgent whisky. At 39 years old, this whisky is approaching four decades in the making and only 1,695 bottles have been released of this extra-long double maturation whisky. Emerging from the oak after a 39-year quest to epitomise the intensity and lavishness of exquisite European wines through whisky flavour, is a Single Malt Scotch unlike any that has come before it. Rich and succulent blackberries burst onto the palate, while a sumptuous whisper of crumbled muscovado sugar leaves the taste buds tantalised. The result, a rare vintage resounding with depth and complexity for an unparalleled taste experience.
Tasting notes
At natural strength, light yet creamy-smooth; a very slightly waxy texture and a mouth-watering, sweet start with a notably fruity clove-studded spiciness. Then gently drying, with more spice towards the end yielding a light peppery warmth. Richly flavoured and perfectly balanced, it drinks well neat. With just a dash of water, the texture is thinner, and the sweetness comes forward slightly; there is a shake of salt now at the expense of spicier warmth, which returns in the finish. Very long, fruity, and warming, with a lingering spicy warmth and a hint of salted plums in the aftertaste. The latter is increased by a drop of water, when the whole aftertaste becomes unusually menthol-cool, with perhaps a suggestion of cherry liqueur chocolates.
RISE OF SINGLETON
Glendullan is founded by William Williams & Sons Ltd., blenders from Aberdeen, and is the last of seven distilleries to be built in Dufftown. It shares a private railway siding with nearby Mortlach and all the machinery is driven by an overshot water wheel powered by water from the River Fiddich. William Innes (b.1866) dies in Dufftown aged 89. Innes was almost certainly the first distillery manager at Glendullan and may have worked there until his retirement. He and his wife are recorded as living at Glendullan House in the 1901 and 1911 censuses, and she dies there in 1917. In 1985 the Old Glendullan buildings on the distillery site are decommissioned, though they remain in use as a workshop. Around 2015 the Singleton of Glendullan launches three new expressions as a Global Travel Exclusive: Classic, Double Matured and Master’s Art.
